The time is now for Ghana to venture into nuclear energy production, experts have proffered.

This follows the unsustainable power generation which slumping Ghana’s economic development. Experts from the Atomic Energy Commission, VRA and Energy Commission proposed this at a forum in Peduasi to educate journalists on nuclear energy as an alternative energy mix for the country.

According to the experts, although building a nuclear plant at the initial stage is expensive, it guarantees energy sustainability for a longer period and it is cheaper to operate as compared to thermal and hydro energy.

The commodity needed to run such nuclear plant is uranium, and according to the experts, Africa, produces the commodity in larger quantity.

“The main export for Niger is uranium and they close to Ghana. Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania are all exploring and we have also seen patches of it in Ghana although we are yet to find out if we can have it in commercial quantity… In fact we are well endowed in this region called ECOWAS and it depends on how well we handle it”, the experts explained.

Security

According to the experts, all fears surrounding the construction and operating a nuclear power in Ghana should be allayed. It was stated that with the new nuclear plants that are being built, it can even resist the impact of missiles if targeted against it.

“Even if a plane is intentionally flown in the direction of the nuclear plant, it would remain intact after the collision”, the experts added.
