The cashew industry holds tremendous economic potential for Ghana, Mr. Christian Dahm, Managing Director of African Cashew Alliance, an international NGO, has said.
He stressed that: "increasing local processing can create thousands of jobs and a stable market for farmers' produce".
Mr. Dahm was speaking at the celebration of the Ghana cashew day in Sunyani on Thursday attended by cashew farmers, traders and processors.
He explained that Africa was the biggest producer of cashew and it was crucial for farmers, buyers, processors and researchers to join hands and develop the industry.
According to him, apart from the health benefits cashew production provided, it was also a sound economic venture that played a significant role in every developing economy.
Mr. Dahm urged Ghanaians to show interest in the cultivation of cashew as "it is a well recognized economic product on the international market".
Dr. Emmanuel Dwumoh from Cocoa Research Institute, Mr.Rowell Kuti of Technoserve,Mr. Yayra Amedzro from West African Market Link, and Mr. Seth Osei Akoto from Cashew Development Project took the participants through cashew marketing, farming, research and development in Ghana.
