Volta Region on Thursday signed a deal with the Ningxia Province of China for the development of rice fields on the vast plains around Wheta, in the Ketu-North District.

An initial 100 hectares of land is expected to be plotted for rice cultivation under the deal.

The two regional entities within their nations have been nurturing a sister-region relationship for the past three years.

Front line organizations superintending the project are the Volta Region Development Agency (VRDA), a development group sponsored by the Volta Regional House of Chiefs and the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC).

A similar China-Ghana deal some three and half decades ago brought about the Afife Irrigation Dam, which serve vast fields in the area with water for rice cultivation.

Togbe Afede XIV, Paramount Chief of the Asogli Traditional Areas, said the idea was mooted at a durbar in Ho on January 2011 in honour of a Chinese Ambassador to Ghana.

He observed that the agricultural development pact was the culmination of efforts over the past three years, during which there were reciprocal and exploratory visits by the sides.

Fu Xing Guo, Vice-Governor of the Ningxia province said the Volta Region had the potential for agricultural production, and the Chinese have the capacities to turn things round for the region.

Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, Outgoing Volta Regional Minister said the regions potentials were bounteous and investors investment were secured.
