Businesses have been called upon to engage employable members of the communities in which they are located, to reduce operational cost and help curb rural-urban migration.

Godknows Tough Dotse Bedi, a Tema-based businessman, who made the call, said using local content to run a business was more profitable than relying on labour from outside the community, adding that would discourage the youth in the area from looking for greener pastures elsewhere.

“For instance, there is no point in putting up a filling station in a village or town and look for attendants to employ from outside the area,” he said.

Mr. Bedi was speaking at the opening of a new filling station at Agotime-Akpokofe, along the Ho-Aflao road, at the weekend.

Apart from calling for job-creation for the youth, Mr. Bedi also urged businesses, especially corporate bodies, to use part of their profits to support the communities they operate in, with the provision of basic amenities to facilitate development.

That, he said, would foster goodwill from the communities and help the businesses to expand to benefit broader national development efforts, and added that plans were far advanced to put up shops at the station and employ local people to run them.

As part of the opening ceremony, some vehicles and motorbikes were fuelled free of charge.
