Mr John Mensah and Mrs Emelia Mensah, founders of the much-acclaimed and well-known establishment Uncle John’s Bakery, will receive the honour of being the recipients of the 2017 GUBA Black Star Award for Enterprising Business at the 2017 GUBA Awards, on Saturday 3rd of June 2017 at the Intercontinental Hotel, O2, London.

The Enterprising Business award centres on the recognition of resourceful businesses that are cornerstones within the British-Ghanaian community.

Uncle John’s bakery’s consistency in business, qualifies them for a ‘GUBA Black Star Award’, honouring a total of thirteen outstanding members of the Ghanaian, UK and African community.

Mr and Mrs Mensah established Uncle John’s Bakery more than 20 years ago, taking the initiative to venture into the baking industry having been underwhelmed at what was on offer when they first arrived in the United Kingdom in 1982.

A combination of the techniques passed on by Mrs Mensah’s mother Mary Fofia Arthur, and the family’s sweet bread recipe from Mr Mensah’s mother Nana Mary, fused to produce a quintessentially Ghanaian sweet bread experience that has now become synonymous with Uncle John’s Bakery.

Their enterprising nature and audacious fortitude have been the foundations which have allowed Uncle John’s Bakery to grow into an established success story in the Ghanaian community, consistently triggering positive testimonials from a wide and varied base of satisfied customers who have fallen in love with the product of their traditional baking methods.

The Bakery offers a variety of freshly baked varieties of bread and baked goods sourced from the North London bakery to distributors, independent stores and supermarkets.

Mr and Mrs Mensah’s business has now found its home in a larger facility which will allow the stocking of more products and the fulfilment of orders to a larger scale.

This accolade comes as a testament of invaluable services of Uncle John’s bakery in providing a necessary service for the Ghanaian community in the UK.
