Atik Mohammed has asked the Securities and Exchange Commission as well as the Bank of Ghana to renegotiate with Menzgold in order to legitimize their gold collectible business.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) wrote to the gold-trading firm, asking them to shut down demanding that all trading in gold without licence be terminated.
It has also directed Menzgold not to take new contracts (investments) and further halt the broadcast and publishing of all its adverts.
Addressing the issue on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo', Atik Mohammed told host Kwami Sefa Kayi that "this Menzgold issue has been needlessly publicized. Matters of investment, matters of banking and so forth; look, sometimes, discretion is of essence".
According to him, it is not appropriate to seek to cripple Menzgold which has employed lots of Ghanaian youth.
To him, the regulatory institutions should hold discussions with management of Menzgold and its owner, Nana Appiah Mensah, and find ways to give them licence to operate legitimately instead of causing "panic" among its customers and the general public.
“The idea should be to get them regulated but not to close down a business which we know people have made investments in . . . get them to apply to be licensed. That’s what you should do so that you can begin to exercise those regulatory powers over them,” he said.
Atik further reposed confidence in Nana Appiah Mensah, saying “I’m not sure he’s that lawless as to turn down an invitation to regularize his operations if indeed what they’re doing should come under SEC . . . We need to just understand the module he’s operating”.

BOG and SEC must be current with modern trends in global financial markets. Menzgold does not fall under the law that SEC sought to classify it under.
Why are we always bringing up the issue of employment when people are found to have gone against the laws of the land. Does the provision of employment override the laws of the land?
i hope they listen to your wisdom
I couldn't agree more with you Atik. Nana Appiah Mensah is a very successful businessman. He has succeeded in opening branches of Menzgold in Spain, the UK and in Nigeria. Why is BoG and SEC creating fear and panic among Menzgold customers? They reported Menzgold to EOCO with the speed of an antelope and instead of waiting for EOCO to come out with its report they are closing down the company because they have the powers. BoG and SEC are state institutions but do they really respect other state institutions? I thought the language of BoG has been YOUR INVESTMENTS ARE SAFE. But it is rather Menzgold who are assuring customers of the safety of their investments. Who then has the interest of the customers at heart? The evidence is there for all to see. Ghanaians killing Ghanaian businesses! Do you expect God to bless our homeland if we are doing this to ourselves. Please, for goodness sake don't abuse the power which Ghanaians have entrusted upon you.
Please let all concern about Menzgold Operations be proactive. Dissolving Ghanaian businesses all the time is not a remedy.
For God and country ,Atik I hope hey will listen .Our regulators set down thinking the young business will collapse but rather more customer entered. Now these people are going through their books in other to collapse when our bank are losing customers. They should sit down with the man and solve the problem.Do not create panic in the system.
