It is said that good leaders deliver results whereas great leaders develop people; good leaders have vision whereas great leaders have values; good leaders are role models at work whereas great leaders are role models in life. Again, it is said that effective leadership is defined not by attributes or flowcharts but by results and accomplishments. An examination of the life of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia confirms clearly that it is possible for one to be a good leader, a great leader, and an effective leader at the same time.
Dr. Bawumia is the leader who is not only focused on achieving results, but doing so, with impeccable effectiveness and efficiency. It is trite that leadership is about making life easy and comfortable for the people. Today, because of Bawumia, most of the ‘difficult things’ we do in life has been made easy and convenient by a simple click of a computer button or a mobile phone. Dr. Bawumia is the leader committed to using digital technology to transform lives, and make our life-burdens much easier and convenient.
Today, because of Bawumia, Ghanaians are able to easily transfer money from their bank accounts to MOMO accounts and from their MOMO accounts to bank accounts without visiting the bank. Today, because of Bawumia, Ghanaians are able to easily effect mobile money transfers from one network to another without incurring extra costs. Today, because of Bawumia, Ghanaians are able to buy ECG credits with their mobile phones without going to any ECG vendor.
Today, because of Bawumia, electricity consumers using postpaid ECG meters are able to pay their electricity bills without visiting any ECG office. Today, because of Bawumia, Ghanaians are able to renew their health insurance subscriptions with their phones without visiting NHIS offices. Today, because of Bawumia, about two-third of Ghanaians have access to a digital national ID (Ghana) Card and can travel with it across the globe even without a travelling passport. Today, because of Bawumia, a Ghanaian can visit any location in the country without asking anybody for direction.
Today, because of Bawumia, blood and other critical supplies are delivered to any geographical area in Ghana in a more secure, reliable and timely manner with the help of drone technology. Ultimately, today, because of Bawumia, the Ghanaian economy is becoming increasingly digitized and formalized in a manner that makes life easy while at the same time enhancing revenue generation, bolstering the fight against crime and saving the Ghanaian taxpayer millions of Ghana cedis which would have otherwise been lost through corruption and systemic wastage.
In the NPP, the name, Bawumia also personifies party loyalty, commitment, tolerance, sacrifice and selflessness all of which are the very principles underpinning the founding of the Party. It would be recalled that Dr. Bawumia is that person who, for love of his party (NPP), left a lucrative job as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, to support the NPP as Running Mate in 2007, at the time everybody was tipping him to become the next Governor of the Central Bank. He only cared about the NPP.
When the Party lost the 2008 General Elections, he remained true and loyal to the NPP. Ahead of election 2012, Dr. Bawumia declined huge job offers by the World Bank and some top Universities in Europe and Canada, to focus on the NPP’s 2012 election bid. Dr. Bawumia was subsequently appointed as Running Mate. After the polls, when the Electoral Commission declared the NPP as losers, many NPP members and kingpins came to accept this fate. They gave up.
But, Dr. Bawumia would not give up that easily. He was convinced that many things had gone wrong in the elections and so, he gallantry inspired and led the NPP to conduct an intensive audit into the elections and all pink sheets leveraging on technology. In the course of this exercise, Dr. Bawumia was involved in a near fatal accident that almost claimed his life, but he never gave up. He led the Party to successfully uncover the rigging machinery that was deployed in the elections.
Dr. Bawumia who had virtually become a full time employee at the Party Headquarters with no salary, was thus vindicated. The Party then mounted an unprecedented election petition. Dr. Bawumia again abandoned all his schedules to become the Party’s Star Witness in the grueling 8-month election petition. Despite losing by a narrow 5-4 majority decision, all the nine (9) Supreme Court justices UNANIMOUSLY agreed with Dr. Bawumia that there were indeed several irregularities with the 2012 general elections and therefore made far-reaching recommendations.
Indeed, as a result of this Bawumia-inspired election petition, the EC, implementing the recommendations of the Supreme Court, undertook several election reforms making it practically impossible for elections to ever be rigged in this country. These reforms, coupled with lessons learnt by the NPP from the election petition, was what SET THE STAGE for the NPP’s historic victory in the 2016 General Elections, where the Party won by over a million votes.
Again, in the run-up to the 2020 General Elections, Dr. Bawumia chaired the NPP Manifesto Committee which Manifesto, delivered yet another resounding victory for the NPP in the presidential elections. The NPP won the 2020 presidential elections with over 500,000 votes, which is the highest margin of victory in the history of the Fourth Republic for a political party seeking a second-term in office.
All in all, Dr. Bawumia has proven to be the biggest revelation and addition to the NPP’s electoral fortunes in the last two decades. He has consolidated the NPP’s support-base among the middle class. He has delivered the Universities to the NPP. He has delivered his home region, [the original Northern Region], which used to be an NDC stronghold, to the NPP. I am not sure anybody ever imagined the NPP winning more Parliamentary Seats than the NDC in the Northern Region. In fact, Dr. Bawumia has delivered even the Zongos to the NPP.
It is also worth making the point that Dr. Bawumia’s emergence in the country’s political landscape has drastically changed the face of our body politic. He has changed our appreciation of politics from propaganda to facts and data. He is the all-time biggest threat to the NDC’s political fortunes. Dr. Bawumia is super tolerant, down to earth and trustworthy. He is only focused on getting the job done and delivering prosperity to Ghanaians and the NPP.
With this and more, you should understand why Dr. Bawumia is loved so well in the NPP, not just by the establishment but also the Party grassroots. You should understand why no one can beat Bawumia in any elections in the Party, today. You should understand why he won almost 70% of the votes in the Party’s Super Delegates Conference, and is set to win by even a much bigger percentage come November 4. You should understand why Bawumia is the only man who can lead the NPP to break the eight. You should understand why IT IS POSSIBLE.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, you are indeed a great blessing to the NPP, and to every Ghanaian. We have all lived and felt your good, great and effective leadership. We cannot wait to campaign and vote for you as the next President of Ghana. As you turn 60 today, I am pleased to join the rest of the world to celebrate your life. It has, indeed, been 60 years of POSSIBILITY; 60 years of INNOVATIVE THINKING; 60 years of IMPACTFUL LIFE; 60 years of ACCOMPLISHMENT; and 60 years of SERVANT LEADERSHIP.
May ALMIGHTY ALLAH grant all your heart desires and continue to overwhelm you with His bountiful blessings and favours.
Assalamu alaik

@edem, see your foo lish insulting comment has caused the NPP 1000s of votes from floating voters. In the past, many Ghanaians had the impression that NPP was elitist party, now we know who you are. Tell me how many intelligent people are in this government? 110 plus ministers, mostly dumb and greedy. Bawumia said all the theories in opposition, see what we're getting from his collaboration with ofori atta? Stop tagging yourselves, the old impression has effaced from our minds. A party with intelligent people will not take Ghana backwards, at worst, development will be slowed. A party with intelligent people will not be using 18 century method to make a particular person their flagbearer. A party with intelligent people will not attack media houses and create a culture of silence in the country. A party with intelligent people will not allow few people to destroy the whole country because of their greed. A party with intelligent people will not be engaging in galamsay at this scale. A party with intelligent people will not send the dollar rate from 4ghs to 12 GHS in 7 years. A party with intelligent people will not be stealing and hiding foreign currencies in the tune of millions in their bedrooms and poly tanks. A party with intelligent people will not engage in this level of corruption and use unpardonable means to clear perpetuators of no wrongdoing. A party with intelligent people will not abuse discretion in the manner that we have seen in this government. Stop the arrogance, you're far worse than those you critise.
@Edem Kudzo, I am a refined, mentally balanced human being so I will not seek to equalise. This is what most of you in NPP do, you, including HE Bawumia and his wife, insulted and bastardised the person of HE Mahama, but now you cannot withstand an objective evaluation of the performance of your government. You're also referring to the whole NDC as a party with mentally deficient people. Well done, all knowing and arrogant NPP people. That's why God is about to cut you to size. A government that has brought the whole country to the worst ever economic situation, a government that has majority of its people desperately involved in galamsay at the expense of the environmental sustainability of the country. These are not enough for you, a government that touts itself previously as democratic crusaders, is now crusading and leading lawlessness in every fabric of the society including invading the freedom of the press. How can you be coming from the most nepotistic government, the most corrupt government with the greediest of politicians to label another party? I don't think NDC are saints either, but comparatively, this current NPP with in humans like you are the worst ever ruling party in the history of Ghana, if not the entire world.
Whenever they get the least opportunity, they quickly pose the question to those who disagree with them in principle that "what have you achieved in life?". Nobody asks such questions in the advance world, only intelligently impoverished people do so. And it will surprise you what they deem as achievements. You this Edem what have you "achieved" in life? Because there was nothing better for you, you had to join NPP and become a serial caller and then a thug so that you could get your deserving part of the stolen booty and spend it on flashy stuff. Is this why you think you have done anything in life? Your whole government machinery, if you have achieved anything important, the country won't be sinking so fastly as we're observing. Small mindedness of politicians like you is the reason why the country is moving backwards at a high speed. Any well think Ghanaian will withdraw their hearts from NPP and NDC and use their brains to vote for people who can begin the repairing or rebuilding process for the country.
NPP and unprecedented intolerance de3 daabi daabi, it's obvious this Edem guy was part of the ***barred word*** thugs that besieged UTV premises last week. Kwame did not attack any person, he scrutinized hardly the works of some people. If you think he's wrong in any of his assertions, just put out your counter opinion. Because he's right in everything he said and you don't have the mental capacity to confront his thoughts, you result to your village primitive style of using vile language. You're just below the level of humans, no wonder you're osonoba. You people are destroying our revered party
Edem or whatever you haven't you just said worse than what you think you are tagging someone with? Because you are NPP and you perceive him to be NDC? Whatever you said best describes you, and I believe you meant it for yourself and your family and all your kind. Do you know the kind of people who express their opinions here? Anyway, I don't expect you to be able to understand what Kwame said, not because I agree with him entirely but because he's a sound, logical and philosophical person and a matured writer, who I believes mean well for this country!
@Kwame,in the same manner I would want to be charitable to you, a nonentity hog who has perhaps achieved nothing in life yet exhibiting gross intolerance and weakness in the mental faculty towards someone's candid opinion...No wonder such a bastard swine follows NDC,a party full of such mentally deffective/defficient characters!
I wish Dr. Bawumia a happy birthday. I would be charitable to him with my comment because I want to believe that what we have seen of him in government is perhaps the best that he can do. Notwithstanding, this write up is a total rubbish, I will advise anyone who reads the comment before, never to bother reading it. Sometimes I honestly wonder if we have been hypnotized or whatever as a people. Why do we orchestrate setbacks to our own true freedom? How can we be celebrating such ample mediocrity at this time of life? Except for your selfish gains and continuity of failure, what are the gains of selling out false identity of people? Bawumia had his chance to showcase how deep he understands the root cause of Ghana's problems and best they could be dealt with systematically, instead, he joined his boss and their cronies to dissipate the leftovers of our inheritance, borrowing without thoughts and description, printing monies without considering the negative effects on the economy and the future of this country. How can such a person be described as a leader, let alone a good one or effective? Listen, digitalisation is a bonafide tool in this dispensation that ought to significantly improve our economy by default if the right systems are put in place by leadership. No serious minded government will tout themselves for spearheading people's ideas to fruition in the digital space. Serious leaders will create enabling environments so that people do not need to cross path with the vice president before implementing their ideas or to pay "bribes" to see the president. If the systems are in place, you will see the speed at which people's innovations will drive our economy towards industrial one. Stop celebrating mediocres, stop celebrating failure, let's rather challenge our leaders to depart from corruption and small mindedness and we will see the Ghana that we desire for sooner than later.
