A 29–year-old amateur boxer who tried to use a toy gun to allegedly rob a medical doctor at Gbawe in Accra has been arrested.

The police also retrieved an adhesive tape which they believed the accused, Lucas Neglo Mills, would have used to seal the doctor’s mouth and tie his hands and legs during the robbery.

Two other suspects who were in a taxi with the suspect escaped with locally manufactured rifles. They are yet to be identified.
Tip-off

The Kaneshie Police Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr Ernest Owusu, said the suspect was arrested by the Odorkor Police at about 6 a.m. on June 3, 2014, upon a tip-off.

He also said the police had information that a man had been approached by the robbers to join them in a robbery operation at the medical doctor’s house.

The invitee was also asked to arrange for a taxi which would be used to convey the robbers to the medical doctor’s house and also convey their booty back to their respective homes.

Mr Owusu said based on the information received, the police provided a taxi for the operation.

Two suspects escape

Mr Owusu said the gang met at the rendezvous, boarded the taxi and set off for the residence.

The police, he said, trailed the taxi in an unmarked car “but at a point, two of the men stopped the taxi and jumped out of the taxi into a bush nearby.”

He said the police “managed to arrest one of the robbers who was left in the taxi before he could escape.”

Mr Owusu added that the police had mounted a search for the two suspects who escaped. In the meantime, he said, Mills had been interrogated and would be arraigned soon.
