Govt Pledges Support for Private Universities

The Minister of Education, Hon Alex Tettey-Enyo has said government is committed to assisting private universities in the country in the areas of academic competence and research to promote quality education in the country.


He gave the assurance today, Saturday, August 29, 2009 at a groundbreaking ceremony for the building of the permanent campus of Ashesi University College on a 100-acre plot at Brekuso in the Aburi/Nsawam Constituency.


According to the Minister, out of 97,564 applicants for admission into public universities and polytechnics in 2007/2008 academic year, only 40,531 applicants representing 41.5% were admitted. He said there are presently about 33 accredited university colleges in Ghana and said government will ensure that quality and standards are not compromised as tertiary institutions increase in the country. He commended Ashesi University College for its immense contribution to education in Ghana.


Dr. Patrick Awuah the Founder and President of Ashesi University described the ground-breaking ceremony as the beginning of a long journey to promote higher education in Africa. The Chief of Brekuso and Twafohene of Akwapim Traditional Area Nana Oteng Korankye II expressed delight about the location of the University in Brekuso and hoped it will impact positively on the development of the area.
