Graduate teachers especially those in the Greater Accra region have finally embarked on strike. The teachers last week threatened to withdraw their services until government meets with them by last Saturday to draw up a road map towards paying them their 17-month salary arrears.

The leadership of the teachers say since government failed to heed to that call, their members will stay out of the classroom indefinitely until their demands are met.

The Greater Accra regional secretary of National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Livingstone Apedoh told Citi News that their concerns have been ignored.

Meanwhile, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, is expected to commence negotiations on a road map for the payment of salary arrears owed workers on government payroll on Monday. The commission in a statement said the negotiations will be with the Public Services Joint Standing Negotiations Committee in Accra.

The meeting is expected to come up with a “road map for the payment of all salary arrears for 2010/2011 on the Single Spine Salary Structure. ”

The Commission said all unions and associations threatening strike are just ignoring earlier communication on how their salary arrears would be paid.
