The Kumasi Methodist Diocesan Bishop, Right Professor Osei Safo Kantanka, has urged parents not to get carried away by the various socialist promises being trumpeted by politicians.
His caution comes in the wake of President Mahamas pledge to commerce the free Senior High School project in 2016. Prior to this, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akuffo Addo, made free SHS promise his foremost priority during the 2012 general elections.
But Right Professor Osei Safo Kantanka told Okay FM that such promises were equal to undergoing a suicide mission.
He explained that should parent rest their hopes on politicians and wait for that unknown day when free SHS would take off, they will be jeopardizing the future of their wards. This, he explained could lead to internal wrangling and disintegrate families.
They (politicians) would tell parents not to buy books but you would visit schools and find out that these same politicians havent provided the students with books. This has affected our education to an extent that some students cant even make good grades when it comes to writing basic certificate exams. It is rather prudent for the government to provide students with scholarships to perform well rather than the vague promises, he said.
