Two cases of the new H1N1 flu virus have been diagnosed in La Cote d’Ivoire, the first in West Africa, the Ivorian Health Ministry said on Saturday.

A statement from the Ministry said that the cases had been confirmed by tests at the World Health Organization (who).
It gave no indication of the state of health of the patients. Two people suspected of having the virus arrived in Abidjan last week on a flight from Belgium.

The number of confirmed cases worldwide is over 67,000. The virus has killed more than 300 people. Some1.6 million people are thought to have died as a result of AIDS in Africa in 2007. Most of the estimated one million people killed by malaria each year are young children.
