The Women Heart Foundation relates that approximatly 8 million women in the US are currently living with heart disease. Many lifestyle factors are contributing to heart disease such as cigarette smoking, alcohol intake, physical inactivity, and obesity just to name a few. Here a 4 tips to help prevent heart disease.
Learn CPR
Did you know that effective CPR, provided immediately after cardiac arrest, can double a victims chance of survival? Since 75 to 80 percent of all out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen at home, knowing CPR can save the life of someone you love. Visit AmericanHeart.org to find a CPR training course near you.
Limit your alcohol
Though the risk of heart disease is lower in people who drink a moderate amount of alcohol (one drink for women, two drinks for men per day), drinking too much can raise blood pressure and actually lead to heart failure or stroke as well as contribute to high triglycerides, heart palpitations, obesity, alcoholism, suicide and accidents. Stick to one to two drinks per day for optimal heart health.
Go for a walk
Simple, convenient and free, going for a 30 minute walk can improve your heart health as well as ward off obesity, diabetes and osteoporosis. Step it up to a jog and youll reap even more health benefits. And on the days you arent in the mood for walking, consider a swim, hike or even a home exercise video. Just move and do your heart good.
Turn away trans fat
Trans fat, found in many fried foods, baked goods and margarines and shortenings, can raise your bad ( LDL) cholesterol and lower your good (HDL) cholesterol. Avoiding trans fat can reduce your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Trans fat is listed on the nutrition labels on packaged goods ďż˝ avoid the products that contain trans fat.
