The Presbyterian University College is to establish a Medical School at its Agogo campus in the Asante-Akim North District, Professor Kofi Sraku Lartey, its President, has announced.

He said the College had already had extensive discussions with the Ghana Medical and Dental Council for the smooth take-off of the school.

Prof Lartey, who made this known when he addressed this year’s “Achievers Award” ceremony in Kumasi, said the College currently runs a four-year Nursing and Physician Assistant programme with its pioneer students expected to graduate this year.

He said given the inadequate numbers of health professionals, it has become imperative for the private universities to invest in the training of more of them.

Prof Lartey said there is the need for the country to be a paradigm shift from the present over-concentration on programmes relating to the social sciences and humanities in favour of applied sciences and technologically-based courses.

This, he said, is necessary to assist produce the required manpower and expertise to address the nation’s development challenges.

The awards was organised by the African Media Consult on the theme: “56 years of Ghana’s Independence, the role of private universities.”

Two tertiary institutions - the Presbyterian University College and All Nations University College, were honoured with trophies for their commitment to the promotion of science-based programmers.

Nana Michael Ampong, Chief Executive Officer of the African Media Consult, praised the two for their contribution to the development of the human resource base.
