The Eastern Region has recorded its first case of Pneumococal Meningitis following the death of a 16-year-old boy at the St Dominic Hospital at Akwatia on Friday, January 22, 2016.
The Deputy Director in charge of Clinical Care at the Eastern Regional Health Directorate, Dr Emmanuel Amoah confirmed to Graphic Online that the post mortem report showed that the boy died from Pneumococal Meningitis.
Graphic Online’s Eastern Regional reporters, Naa Lamiley Bentil and George Folley report that a second person has also tested positive to the disease and is receiving treatment at the Holy Family Hospital at Nkawkaw.
Another person has also died from the disease in the Nadowli-Kaleo District of the Upper West Region, the District Director of the Ghana Health Service, Florence Angsomwini has confirmed.
According to her, the district has recorded 13 suspected cases with three testing positive of the disease.
This brings to 39 the number of people who have died of the disease since December 2015.
The Ashanti Region has recorded four deaths while another strain of the disease, Cerebro-spinal meningitis (CSM) was recorded in the Volta Region.
The Brong Ahafo and Northern Regions have recorded a total of 33 deaths.
