His Excellency the Vice President, John Dramani Mahama has tasked Ghanaians to use the memory of Africa's man of the millennium, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, to move the continent to the next stage of development.
He said this during the 3rd Founders Day Celebration of the Birthday of Kwame Nkrumah (Sept 21st), a day set aside by government as a statutory public holiday.
Present at the function were three former presidents John Agyekum Kufuor of Ghana, former President of Germany, Horst Kohler and former South African President Thabo Mbeki Politicians, Parliamentarians and some members of the diplomatic corps.
Three years ago, President John Evans Atta Mills endorsed 21st September of every year to be celebrated in memory of the first President of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. This is in recognition of his foresight and fortitude which led to Ghana's attainment of independence from British colonial rule in 1957.
An influential 20th century advocate of Pan-Africanism, he was a founding member of the Organization of African Unity (now African Union- AU) and was the winner of the Lenin Peace in 1963. With Ghana independent of its colonial masters, Nkrumah worked hard to liberate the whole of the African Continent. He supported and financed liberation struggles and nationalist movements throughout the continent.
Addressing dignitaries at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum where the function was held, John Mahama who is currently acting as the President of the country said Africa has become complacent in terms of growth and development, stressing that it is time for the country to wake and forge ahead together for development.
Even though Africa is making progress, we are not making progress fast enough. We can make this progress faster if we elaborate our markets and our economic muscle as a continent and as a people. It is time to give life to the dream of a united Africawe can see a much greater progress than we are seeing today, he said.
To him, considering how developed other countries are, there is no way they are going to move away from the front lane to be overtaken: we have to work together and pull ourselves; to move up to the front of that queue.
Let us use the memory of this great leader (Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah) to steer our continent on to the next stage of the vision of the founders of our nation; and that is bringing our people together as one continent with one destiny, John Dramani said.
