Three people are feared dead with the fate of dozens of others unknown when an articulated truck fell over a passenger bus and a taxicab on the Lapaz stretch of the newly constructed George Walker Bush Motorway (N1 Highway) on Tuesday evening.

An eyewitness told Citi News the police and personnel of the national ambulance service are working around the clock to remove the trapped passengers under the trailer loaded with oranges and was heading towards the Achimota side of the road.

If the deaths are confirmed that will bring to about 13 the number of people who have lost their lives on the Millennium Challenge Account-funded 14-kilometre motorway.

According to other monitored reports, the articulated truck was on a tough speed and attempts to apply its brakes failed when another vehicle from the opposite direction pulled up to make a u-turn.

Other bystanders also attributed the cause of the accident to a power blackout in the area that has affected the smooth operation of traffic lights.

This has given credence to the debate for the installation of solar-powered traffic control systems in the country to avoid such fatal motor crashes.
