The police administration says pockets of incidents that have characterized the ongoing biometric registration exercise give a glimpse of what might happen during the electioneering period later this year.

Acting head of the Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, DSP Cephas Arthur has however assured that there will be no cause for alarm as they will do all needed to ensure peace prevails during and after the December 2012 elections.

According to him the Police Service we will not fold its arms and watch on, adding that “we are devising our own strategies to avert any problem which will threaten the peace in the country.”

His comments follow last Saturday’s incident at Arugu, in the West Mamprusi District where four people were shot with two others hacked with machetes following misunderstandings over which territory the biometric registration exercise should be undertaken.

Speaking in an interview on the Big Bite morning show on Xfm95.1, DSP Arthur said, “if this is taking place at a time that we are doing our registration it stands to reason that anything at all can happen during elections.”

“However as a security agency we will not sit mum and watch on whilst some of these incidents happen and so we are devising our own strategies together with our sister security agencies” he assured.

DSP Arthur indicated that the ability of the Service to successfully police five different elections since 1992 puts them “in a better footing to be able to provide a better security for this upcoming elections” adding that, “there is no real cause for alarm.”

He emphasized that the Police are in control and in charge and will ensure that everything is carried out peacefully.

He advised citizens to conduct themselves in a way that will engender development for the country and also warned that they should not engage themselves in any criminal activities which will threaten the peace in the country.
