The Executive Director for Child's Rights International, Mr. Bright Appiah, has called on advocacy groups to support a campaign by a human rights lawyer, Nana Oye Lithur, to appeal a ruling that quashed a 10-year jail sentence of Prophet Kofi Yirenkyi alias Jesus OneTouch.

Nana Oye Lithur was unhappy with last Friday’s ruling and is initiating moves to get the Attorney-General’s office file an appeal in the case which involves the defilement of a 10-year-old girl.

According to Mr. Appiah, the victim’s welfare was totally neglected throughout the court hearing, hence the need for an appeal.

“Jesus Onetouch” was in January this year, sentenced to a 10-year jail term on two counts for allegedly defiling his 10-year-old daughter and incest. But his sentence was overturned on Friday by Justice Emmanuel Dzakpasu.

Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Appiah said the overturning of the prophet's sentence leaves much to be desired as far as the victim is concerned.

“The most important thing is not the criminal aspect of it because in that case, we would be talking about certain technicalities left for the lawyers. But the important thing is to look at what will be in the best interest of the child,” the children's rights advocate said.

Mr. Appiah said the child’s welfare should be the State’s priority thus Nana Oye Lithur’s move must be endorsed.
