JOY FMs Anny Osabutey has won this years CNN Multichoice African Radio Journalist of the year Award at a ceremony in Lusaka, Zambia.
Anny Osabutey was the only Ghanaian nominee amongst 34 other nominees selected from across Africa for the 2012 edition of the awards.
His Hotline documentary, Squatters Paradise won the continents most prestigious journalism award in the radio category.
Squatters Paradise was first broadcast in 2011.
Two Kenyan journalists Tom Mboya and Evanson Nyaga with their story about an African tribe in India, long-forgotten and little-known, won the overall award.
Speaking on Joy FM's Super Morning Show Monday, Mr Osabutey said his objective in doing the documentary was to tell the brighter side of life in an otherwise gloomy situation in hazardous slum.
He said when he started visiting the slum to gather information for the documentary, he was struck on the very first day by children in the slum strutting gaily and singing the Ghana National Anthem
That gave him an idea that even in that desolate, seemingly desperately poor conditions, the slum dwellers found some happiness - or at least had something to be cheerful about and were proud of their country even if systematic neglect by the country's leaders had created the sea of poverty, squalor and misery they were swimming in.
Anny Osabutey said that experience was enlightening and humbling and ignited his passion to tell the story the way he did.
That passion permeated the entire documentary and according to him, fellow journalists at the awards ceremony said the dominant presence of his voice in the story was compelling and telling.
