Black Stars defender, Jerry Akaminko has poured scorn on news that he was drunk driving when he was involved in an accident on Friday.

Akaminko’s Infiniti car was involved in an accident late Friday, in Koforidua in the Eastern Region and he tells GNA Sports: “I was not drunk; in the first place I’m not even a fan of alcohol”.

“Accidents do happen everywhere and the Police officers who were at the scene understood that perfectly well. They did not even charge me with any offence and currently, I’m doing very well and enjoying time with my family in Kumasi.”

The Turkish-based defender who has been named among the provisional 26 players expected to begin camping in Abu Dhabi in the New Year ahead of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa recounts there was no casualties.

“It happened on the Koforidua road. I do not like to recount it because it gives me flashbacks that I do not enjoy. I was travelling with my family to Kumasi and on reaching a place called barrier, it just happened.”

He claimed “it is laughable to hear I was supposedly under the influence. Why will I do that? Put myself and my family at such risk just like that? I am a responsible person and I know better”.
Quizzed whether he has been mandated to report to the Police at a later date, Akaminko answered in the negative; insisting “nothing of that was asked of me. Everything was settled within a few minutes after the accident”.

The former Heart of Lions skipper will be hoping to make the cut of 23 players Coach Kwasi Appiah is mandated to present to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the biannual gathering.
If picked, the competition which commences for the first time in an odd year will mark the Eskişehirspor defender’s debut at the flagship continental football tournament.

The Stars will be seeking to end Ghana's trophy drought at the continental level which spans three decades.
