The National Security Council Secretariat will intensify efforts in stopping smugglers from sending fuel to Ghana�s neighbouring countries of La Cote d�Ivoire, Togo and Burkina Faso, an offcicial statement indicated.
The statement issued by Mahama Ayariga, Minister for Information and Media Relations, indicated that last month recorded an increased rate of fuel smuggling across Ghana�s borders.
This came to the fore after an Anti-Fuel Smuggling exercise.
�This Anti-Fuel Smuggling exercise by the security agencies has resulted in the seizure of significant quantities of fuel smuggled in jerry cans and petrol tankers,� the statement read.
It added: �Operators of fuel filling stations in towns close to the borders are being closely monitored by the Anti-Fuel Smuggling operation.�
The statement adduced that the operation is to prevent the smuggling of large quantities of fuel �in containers, drums and false compartments.�
�The public is encouraged to assist the security agencies with information regarding such smuggling activities,� it urged.
