Mr Kwadwo Kankam, a 37-year old Architect, was on Thursday enstooled as the new Apagyahene of Kumasi under the stool name Nana Owusu Afriyie IV, at a grand ceremony at the Manhyia Palace.

Nana Afriyie succeeds Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie, the late Apagyahene, who died at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) on Tuesday, January 22.

The programme had in attendance former President John Agyekum Kufour, Dr. Kwame Addo-Kufour, former Defence Minister, Professor Francis Addo-Kufour, all direct uncles of the new Apagyahene, as well as a host of traditional rulers and other dignitaries.

Tradition was at its best as the new chief, adorned in a black cloth, was carried high in a palanquin amidst the playing of "Fontonfrom" and other traditional drums soon after swearing an oath of allegiance to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Palace.

The Asantehene charged the new Apagyahene to at all times, hold in high esteem the tradition and custom of the people and also listen to the advice of his elders.

In addition, it was expected of him to be humble, respectful, truthful and honest in the discharge of his duties.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu reminded Nana Afriyie of the exemplary leadership qualities of his predecessor, saying he should emulate his ways to enable him to succeed in his endeavours.

He stressed the need for him to be a unifier and development-oriented to bolster sustainable socio-economic growth of his people.

Nana Afriyie thanked the Asantehene for the honour done him and assured that he would be committed to the cause and welfare of his people and also abide by the oath he had sworn.
