The President, Mr John Dramani Mahama, will on Friday host an extraordinary session of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Accra.

It will be the first meeting to be convened by Mr Mahama since he was elected Chairman of the Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS in Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire, in March this year.

The ECOWAS leaders will discuss a wide range of issues relating to the peace and progress of the sub-region.

At a media briefing at the Flagstaff House in Accra yesterday, the Head of Communications at the Presidency, Mr Ben Dotsei Malor, said the discussions would centre on peace and security, regional integration and infrastructure development.

Those issues, he said, constituted the vision set out by Mr Mahama when he was elected ECOWAS Chairman in Yamoussoukro.

The meeting is coming off at a time when sub-regional security has become a major talking point globally, with Boko Haram as the major focus.

Mr Malor said like Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who had a strong desire for African unity, Mr Mahama was of the strongest conviction that ECOWAS could and should lead the way for the rest of Africa to follow in ensuring continental peace and unity.

Mr Mahama will officially open the conference.
