American poet and author Maya Angelou is being honored at the United Nations as one of the elders of the community of literary greats and a strong voice for human and civil rights.
2011 has been proclaimed the International Year for People of African Descent in recognition of their rich contributions to the global society.
An exhibit at UN headquarters in New York will showcase African art and culture.
Ms. Angelou will display a poem entitled a "Brave and Startling Truth" that she wrote for the organization's 50th anniversary.
