George Guilford, a 47-year-old former employee of the defunct Western Veneer and Lumber Company (WVLC), a timber firm in Sekondi, has indicated that he now detests being called a Ghanaian.

He has therefore renounced his Ghanaian citizenship for what he describes as the unwillingness on the part of those in authority to address the sufferings of the ordinary Ghanaian.

Mr. Guildford, who is a father of three, has thus returned his Ghanaian passport to the Immigration Service and his voter ID card to the Electoral Commission (EC).

Speaking in an interview, the visibly frustrated man indicated that he had notified his family about his decision. He however, did not indicate the country in which he wants to take a nationality.

“I am now living in Ghana under a privilege not by right, though I was born and bred in Ghana to Ghanaian parents from Cape Coast and Asankragwa”, he revealed.

According to him, his father, who worked with the same company (WVLC) for about 35 years, suffered a similar fate resulting in his death.

George Guildford, who worked with the defunct WVLC for over 24 years, claimed he and other colleagues numbering about 600, were yet to receive their severance package after doing all they could, including a petition to parliament.
