Alhaji Collins Dauda, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, has said his outfit is closely monitoring activities of metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs) across the country, to ensure that they stick to their administrative and executive functions.

The ministry asked the MMDCEs to run the assemblies after the dissolution of the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies after the Supreme Court barred the Electoral Commission (EC) from conducting the district assembly elections.

Some people have called on government to rescind its directive because it is unconstitutional, while others have threatened to sue the authorities for giving the order.

However, speaking on the floor of Parliament, Alhaji Dauda said the ministry would devise measures to ensure that the MMCEs do not deviate from their core mandate.

This, according to him, will “avoid excess and abuse,” which are the concern of some Members of Parliament.

“As we try to avoid abuse of excesses and abuse of these chief executives, it is important that we go back to the arrangement of the process that will bring back the assembly members and that is to have the elections held as quickly as possible,” Alhaji Dauda said.
