The Accra metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has started an exercise to keep Ghana’s ceremonial streets in a clean state at all times.

The Liberation Road, which joins the Ministries area from the Independence Avenue, is said to be the busiest on any day.

International visitors are chauffeured through this all important road which is a direct link from the Kotoka International Airport.

The Metropolitan Coordinating Director of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Mr. Sam Ayeh-Dateh, who made the disclosure, said weeding and clearing of the grasses along this road has been ongoing for the past two days.

Speaking to journalists at last Saturday during National Sanitation Day in Accra, Mr. Ayeh-Dateh also indicated that the AMA taskforce is on guard to protect the frontage of these streets which have been painted in white colour.

He said the AMA is wild on these matters, warning that, according to the AMA byelaws, anyone who is caught destroying the beauty of the street will be sanctioned.

The cleanup exercise took the Coordinating Director and his team to Ayigbe Town in Abossey Okai where choked gutters were desalted and emptied into waiting trucks for evacuation.

The team also went to the Abbosey Okai spare parts dealers’ area and supervised the dredging of the choked gutters.

The situation however was disappointing at the central business district as shop owners sat unconcerned, waiting to open their shops to do business.

The exercise ended at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital where the Chief Executive officer, Dr. Gilbert Buckle, joined hands with the laboratory staff, the surgical, pharmaceutical and other departments to clean the hospital.

Briefing Journalist, he said that was the new beginning of Korle Bu and that is a departure from acrimonious relationship between management and staff.
