A Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Nii Lante Vanderpuye has said nothing should discourage traditional and religious leaders from expressing political views and must not entertain the fear of being vilified by politicians.

According to him, they risk being blamed by future generations if they fail to seek the welfare of their people and decline to refuse to speak out on important national issues.

Shunning poltics, he said could make politicians develop the tendencies of plunging the country into serious challenges.

Nii Lante Vanderpuye made the remark when he paid a courtesy call on some of the chiefs at the Kwahu East District in the Eastern Region, yesterday.

Mr. Vanderpuye said Nananom and pastors wielded a lot of moral power that they could use to better the lot of Ghanaians but have underestimated it for the fear of being tagged as belonging to one political party or the other.

The Deputy Minister urged chiefs and pastors to constructively criticise government and to also give suggestions that would benefit all.

The Deputy Minister again made a special appeal to religious leaders to also use their offices to preach patriotism and national cohesion.

He further, entreated Ghanaians to endeavour to inculcate the habit of not relying totally on the government for their needs.
