Two illustrious businessmen, Messrs Osei Kwame (Despite) and Ernest Ofori Sarpong, have been honoured for their "immense contribution towards humanity" by FITNESS FIRST Club (FFC).

The duo, who are patrons of the club, were specially credited with a plaque each for their "deep affection and sincere concern for victims in the June 3rd twin disaster".

Following the massive destruction of properties running into several millions of cedis and the loss of nearly 160 lives, in last month's flood and fire disaster, Dr Osei Kwame and Dr Ernest Ofori Sarpong set up a relief fund with an initial amount of GHC 100,000 to support relief efforts for the victims.

At a short but impressive ceremony to honour the two individuals, Spokesperson for the club, Mr Emmanuel T Brown, read glowing citations in acknowledgement of their humanitarian acts describing them as "true philanthropists par excellence".

The citation in honour of the CEO of the Despite Group of Companies read:

"You have donated and contributed immensely in various spheres towards humanity in this country. You continue to make very handsome donations to the needy. You have relieved thousands of people of pain, anguish, despair, grief, depravation and joblessness by your donations and contributions. A few of your singular donations which readily come to mind include;

1. Donations at Wiamoase to the aged
2. Donations to churches and gatherings to widows and orphans
3. Yearly Christmas gifts to widows

This time you have shown another landmark philanthropic disposition by donating towards the June 3rd Kwame Nkrumah Overpass flood -fire disaster victims. The flood-fire disaster claimed over 154 lives. The magnitude and extent of damage to life and property is unprecedented in the country's history. Your deep affection and sincere concern for the victims deserve extra commendation.

FITNESS FIRST Club is happy to join you to make the donation. The Club is very proud to have you as a patron. The entire patrons and members of FFC say A-Y-E-E-K-O in one accord. The club wishes you the very best of God's Blessings."

That of the CEO of Special Investments Ltd read:

The donations and contributions you have made towards humanity is above ordinary. Various pressing humanity needs that others of equal means as yourself gloss over, attracts your compassionate attention; and you donate handsomely. Namely:

1. Regular Support to the Autistic Childrens' Home (Kokomlemle)
2. The East Legon Police Station Project
3. Various Orphanages across the country.

You are unquestionably a true philanthropist par excellence. You will wonder the number of beneficiaries who go on their knees praying every hour, every day for you.
This time victims of the flood-fire disaster of June 3rd, have touched your soft-heart. You have shown genuine concern for their desperate needs. In their moment of despair, when the flood-fire victims have lost all hope, you provide them with relief and cause to rejoice.

FITNESS FIRST is touched by such a sympathetic initiative, and jointly contributes towards such a good cause.
You are a patron that FITNESS FIRST Club is very proud of. Patrons, Executives and Members of the club wish you God's indefatigable favour and blessings for your continuous good works to humanity."

FITNESS FIRST later donated an amount of GHC 10,000 as their widow's mite to the Despite Disaster Relief Fund.

Chief Patron of the Club, Mr Twum Barima, who presented a dummy cheque covering the amount to the two individuals, also personally donated GHC 10,000 as his contribution to the fund set up to alleviate the suffering of the disaster victims.

Earlier in a short address, Chairman of FFC, Mr Martin Oduro, catalogued a litany of humanitarian activities that the club has carried out including donations to the Osu Children's Home, the Ghana Heart Foundation, the East Legon Police Station Project, etc.

PeaceFM's Nana Yaw Kesse, who received the donation on behalf of the Despite Disaster Relief Fund Managers, expressed gratitude for their immense support and gave the assurance that the donations received will trickle down to the affected flood and fire victims.
