The Eastern Regional Manager of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Frederick Adjei-Rudolph has made a passionate plea on government to expedite action on the construction of Koforidua-Bunso, Suhum Asamankese-Oda-Kade, Nkawkaw- Atibie and Abirem roads in the Eastern region.
This according to him, will enable tourist facilities that are cut off from effectively operating due to the deplorable roads to be revived.
He made the appeal at the 10th regional awards night of the year held at The Royal Senchi Resort in the Asuogyaman district.
Tourism, he said is a major poverty alleviation industry with over 450,000 employees and contribute hugely to reduction of unemployment across the country. As a result, there is the need to put the necessary infrastructure in place to boost their operations.
Mr. Adjei-Rudolph disclosed that hospitality industry in the region has chalked 20per cent growth over the past two years and need to be uplifted to a greater height.
At the Eastern Regional ceremony at Senchi, 18 hospitality facilities, two individuals and two media houses were honoured for their contributions towards development of the tourism industry.
The Royal Senchi Hotel and Resort at Senchi in the Asuogyaman District was adjudged the Best Four-Star Hotel in the region.
The Royale Mac Dic Plaza Hotel in Koforidua took the prize in the three-star category, Mount Pleasant Inns and Apartments at Obosomase took the prize for the two-star category, while the VIP Lodge at Mamfe was adjudged the best in the one-star category.
Other award winners were Joefel Catering Services at Anyinam, which received the best food safety and hygiene, Linda Dor Rest Stop Bunso Junction, and best highway restaurant. Charllote Court Berekuso won the hostel of the year.
Other award winners were the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, the New Times Corporation, Kingdom Ventures of Boti Falls, Huhunya and New comer of the year, Royal Lyees,Tutu.
Addressing the ceremony, which marked the 10th Regional Awards, the acting Chief Executive Officer of the (GTA), Mr Gideon Aryeequaye, urged private investors to establish facilities at tourism sites to boost the sector.
He commended the award winners and further urged them to continue to work hard to raise the standard of the hospitality sector.
