Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has lashed out at some chiefs in the Ashanti region who have declared their support for some presidential candidates.
According to him, any chief who wants to engage in partisan politics must first abdicate before doing so.
Addressing the last session of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs for this year in Kumasi on Wednesday, Otumfuo warned that no chief under his supervision would be allowed to meddle in politics.
The Asantehene said it is wrong for chiefs to openly endorse leaders of the various political parties considering the sensitive positions they occupy in society.
“If you want to engage in politics, then I will advise you to vacate your stools. Leaders of the various political parties visit you at your various palaces and may give you gifts, but do not be swayed by the gifts and start endorsing them because that is not the work of chiefs,” he said.
His comments come after some 58 chiefs in the Ashanti region reportedly declared their support for flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo after he stormed the region to campaign.
