Ecobank Ghana on its 4th Ecobank Day celebration has given medical equipment worth Ghc 600,000 to Korle-Bu Maternity block and six other Maternal Health Care Centres in the country.

Taking inspiration from the Ecobank Day celebration theme “Promoting ICT Education & Improving Maternal Health Care in Africa”, Mr. Dan Sackey, Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana said the medical equipment presented to Korle-Bu is a tradition of the Ecobank Group observed across all affiliates.

He explained that the theme for the celebration was chosen because “We believe that digitization, technological advancement, industrialization and the development of the world’s economy thrive on knowledge which is acquired through education.”

“Our focus on ICT is attributed to the wide ICT knowledge gap we believe to be present in basic schools in African countries . . . our focus this year on maternal health care is also precipitated by the fact that according to WHO on a daily basis, about 830 women die from preventable complications associated with pregnancy and childbirth and 99% of all maternal deaths occur in developing countries. This is lamentable more so in women living in rural and impoverished areas,” he revealed.

Even though government of Ghana and various institutions have made donations and contributions towards the development of ICT and Maternal health in Africa, these sectors still require a lot of assistance; hence the Ecobank Ghana donations across the country.

Mr. Dan Sackey averred the donation forms part of the main pillars of the vision of Ecobank Ghana, contributing to the socio-economic development of Africa and the countries in which it operates.

He revealed that as a Pan-African banking institution, they are unrelenting in contributing to the development of Africa and the African people; thus Ecobank Ghana has consistently contributed substantially towards the socio-economic development of Ghana in the area of Health, Education, job creation and financial inclusion.

He again mentioned that Ecobank through the Ecobank Foundation has also partnered The Global Fund in the fight against AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis in Africa and has also embarked on an initiative to finance a model school project that will remodel five Junior High Schools in Ghana.

Speaking to Peacefmonline.com, the Head of Retail Operations, Mr Robert Danso Boakye hinted saying “this is a routine exercise we embark on every November and this is the 4th one; Ecobank Ghana is 25 years old and we do this in Ghana, other 36 countries which Ecobank operates is engaging in the same exercise to give back to the communities where we operate.”

He however enlisted the medical equipment to include Suction machines, Ultrasound machines, Incubators, Autoclave desktops, Delivery beds, Infant weighing scales, Radiant heaters, Phototherapy lights etc.

He stressed that the medical equipments donated to the seven Maternal Health Care Centres in the country are worth Ghc 600,000.

He added that Ecobank is donating 15 computers to furnish the computers lab of Tri Town Secondary School in Aflao and 100 Career Development books; thus “we are also awarding a three year full scholarship to 25 brilliant yet underprivileged Senior Secondary school children across the country”.
