The 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has indicated that the processes leading up to the creation of the Ahafo Region would be completed within 18 months.
According to the President, “the time for the creation of the Ahafo region is due. I promise you that within the next 18 months, the opportunity is going to be given for you to have the Ahafo Region".
President Akufo-Addo made this known on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, when he visited the Acherensua Senior High School in the Brong Ahafo Region, as part of his two-day tour of the region.
The President’s statement drew a rapturous response from the hundreds and hundreds of townsfolk, students and the traditional rulers of Acherensua, who had gathered at Acherensua SHS ahead of the President’s visit.
Thanking the Chiefs and people of Acherensua, President Akufo-Addo called for their support for his administration saying "the task ahead of us is an arduous one. We inherited a very bad economy. Nonetheless, and with God’s guidance, we are beginning to turn things around and we are confident that we will succeed.
This is why from September 2017, the Free SHS policy which was a major campaign pledge, will commence beginning from those who qualify for entry in the 2017/2018 academic year,” he said.
Touching on the specific needs of Acherensua SHS, President Akufo-Addo assured the authorities and students of the school that the Ministry of Education will address their concerns and ensure the construction of a dormitory block and an ICT lab for the school.
“The rehabilitation of your science laboratory is one that is dear to my heart, and I will pay a lot of attention to. Science, technology, engineering and mathematics education is one we have to pay much attention to if we are to succeed in this country,” he said.
The President, in concluding, thanked the school for producing the Minister for National Security, Hon. Albert Kan Dapaah, stressing that “Ghana is grateful to you for such a brilliant man. Perfect understanding and perfect cooperation is what I am getting from him.”

Regions are not created based on tribal n ethnocentric reasons. This is done to foster n improve developments in the area. If you want to talk abt tribalism, then there is no need to create another region in the western region. let us rise above this bigotry tribalism n look at the benefits of having administrative quarters near to the people.
Listen to Ndoum. Name the region Asante West or is it East?
My friend , you know what? lets look at the whole issue from another model-economic perspective and prospective. You would then, appreciate that good results would be achieved if labour is divided to give way to specialisation and Quality in development to get quickly to the People. Each Region has some natural and human resources which to some extend is unique. Therefore, it requires a special attention which would go a Long way to reflect on the maximization and quality of it's development. And if you replicate the same model in all the Regions we could at the end of the day develop faster and better. Please donot let us always read enthnocentrc meaning into everything, playing the tribal card of bigotry would not bring us anywhere.
Your conclusion as "gimmick" the proposed creation of Ahafo Region is a misconception. First of all, this has been the request by the people of the area for a long time, citing the vast geographical and political landscape of the region. Indeed, this area stretches from the east to west covering the top of the Ashanti Region. Secondly, Nkrumah did not create the Brong-Ahafo based on tribe. If so he would have added the Ahafos to the Ashanti Region, since they are also Ashantis. Thirdly, just like the Northern Region, Brong-Ahafo is too big for effective political administration. Hence, the President is only doing the natural thing to make it effective and satisfy the wish and the reality on the ground. So what is the gimmick here?
Ndoum wakasa!! Aside educating me you've just persuaded me that this is a gimmick. Creating a new region is not going to solve existing problems but rather add to government expenditure. I don't understand why Nana is insisting on increasing the size of government, administrative regions and structures, etc. This is unacceptable!
Ndoum has made a very intelligent comment
I second that
what is the need for such a policy? Ahafo was originally part of the ashanti confederation and then detached by Kwame Nkrumah to join the new brong region , Ahafo reports to manhyia on traditional basis and sunyani on political and administrative bases, Ahafo's are ashantis, it was and still is the farming community of the Ashanti's, there is a region for Ashanti's, so please if you really want to do something, just add ahafo back to where it belongs and stop this gimmick of Ahafo region
