Yilo Krobo MP Magnus Kofi Amoatey has said he will request that Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko be invited to parliament to explain the recent huge power tariffs charged by the Electricity Company of Ghana in some parts of the country.
According to him, the ECG’s resort to serving customers with an estimated bill – a bill served clients for whom there is no reading for electricity consumed – is responsible for astronomical electricity bills.
Mr Amoatey’s call follows riots over high electricity bills at Somanya on Monday 29 May. The residents attacked the police following the arrest of an assemblyman who organised a demonstration against the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the area last week in connection with huge discrepancies in electricity bills. Property belonging to ECG were vandalised during the demonstration.
Speaking on the development on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Class91.3FM on Tuesday 30 May, Mr Amoatey said: “I’ll file an urgent question with the Minister of Energy to explain to Ghanaians why the need for an estimated bill.”
“Yesterday, some more people came to show me their bills. A woman came with a bill of GHS10,000, an elderly woman, and one would ask what she does to consume GHS10,000 in a month. There is another gentleman I was told had a bill of GHS200,000. I agree some of them might have defaulted for some time, but I think even within a year, how can a household consume as much as GHS200,000 as electricity bill. There is something wrong somewhere and the minister must explain to us.”
Mr Amoatey said he had organised a meeting with the traditional leaders, police, youth, and officials of the ECG to discuss the way forward for peace to prevail in the area.
Some weeks ago, some irate residents of Akosombo also demonstrated over the same issue.

when Nana Addo was in opposition, he said killer tariff is killing people n light bill is even higher than rent. now u r in power n is the same. 2020 will soon come.
I hope you remember the reasons why NDC lost the election. It is only 5 months into the government of the NPP and the arrogant vibes I'm hearing is almost equal to the venom which led NDC to opposition. The Ghanaian voter is now discerning so if you want to go to opposition in a short while, continue. I have said on many platforms that NPP did not win the election but NDC lost. Study or analyse the 2016 election results very well and also without a political lens and then you will see what i am pointing to.
Magnus Kofi Amoatey are you serious, you are just kidding when did Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko implement the increase of ECG bills, it all started by your incompetent government national destructive party (ndc) so do not show in ***barred word*** in this matter, but rather talk s-e-nse, and come again.
