President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo left the country yesterday to attend the 5th African Union-European Union Summit which took place in Cote D’Ivoire.

The summit, which was attended by some heads of state from Africa and Europe, created the opportunity to strengthen the political and economic ties between the two continents.

This year marks exactly 10 years since the EU-Africa relations began with the adoption of the joint Africa-EU strategy.

At the summit yesterday, AU and EU leaders discussed the future of the EU-AU relations, with special focus on investment in the youth.

Youth development is a key priority for the AU and the EU, as 60 percent of the African population is under the age of 25.

Other priorities of the EU-Africa partnership discussed at the summit were peace and security, governance including democracy, human rights and migration and mobility.

The leaders also discussed investment in trade, skills development and job creation, among others.

The EU is Africa’s main partner. The two continents have been working together over the years to tackle the common challenges of today from investing in the youth, fostering sustainable development and strengthening peace and security.

The President is scheduled to address the summit today.
