The Director of Amnesty International (AI) Ghana, Robert Akoto Amoafo, has said that the majority of Ghanaians do not get access to lawyers due to the limited number of lawyers in the country.
To that end, he has said no measure should be put in place to block persons from entering the legal profession.
His comment comes after angry students of Ghana Law School expressed misgivings regarding the results of the 2017 Bar exams in which only 91 students out of 474 students, representing 19 percent of the total students passed.
The students on Wednesday, 21 February 2018, wore red armed bands to protest against the development.
Out of the 474 students who wrote the exams, a total of 206 are to repeat the entire course after failing. Another 177 students have been referred in one or two papers.
The Student Representative Council (SRC) of GLS is convinced the results could not have been the true reflection of the exams written by the students.
The SRC is therefore demanding remarking of all the failed papers with a drastic reduction in the remarking fee from GHS3000 to GHS500.
Speaking on Accra FM Friday, 23 February 2018, Mr Amoafo said: “This is very disturbing and that is why we want to talk about this to create the awareness.”
He added: “Approximately, we have 2000 lawyers available for of all of us in the country.” This he said is inadequate and so “don’t put measures that will block people from coming into the profession. So we are pleading with the General Legal Council, the government and parliament to take a critical look at this situation.”

lazy students. they attend cheap private universities without maths as occurred at some universities. how can you learn and pass simple law examinations? instead of learning to re write, you want to demonstrate like kwesi pratte. i do not think you should be lawyers at all. you are not worthy of being lawyers. lawless students.
the students should mark their own papers like prof. Mills of blessed memory did. they do not learn. wasting time on ladies and needless activities instead of learning. now you want the president of Ghana to intervene and mark your papers for you. or alternatively, you want to mark your own papers. go and learn and come and write again. lawyer go to court and gets the name of client wrong and the case is adjourned at the cost of the client. study and write again. you failed and nothing should compel examiners to pass you if you performed poorly.
it is a closed shop. they just don't want the peasants to join so impediments are created to ward off many people. that is why sosu is facing challenges. he embarrassed the powers that be and as he is not in one of the well connected they are just showing him where the power lies. these shadowy figures will go after prof atuguba very soon. just look for the names of those who passed and you will see a pattern. the law schools in ghana are some of the most corrupt institutions in the world
3000 ghs, aaah what kwanaa??? what is so special about the legal profession in Ghana? you talking about learning, come to America and enter into a law class and you naaa, you will see say this is a law class. Not Ghana, abaaa!! We are in the 21st century . Gone are the days when this profession was held in high esteem, not again. People in America don't go to the law school because they want to be lawyers but just to get themselves educated.
YOU ARE A NATION DEVELOPER. GOD WILL SEE YOU WELL IN YOUR CARRIER
