Several houseshave been penciled to be pulled down by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) in the coming days.
The affected houses are situated along waterways and thus block the smooth flow of water whenever it rains.
Osei Assibey Antwi, the Kumasi Mayor, who made the disclosure, lamented the increasing flood problems in the metropolis, lately.
According to him, the KMA had already demolished some of the houses in waterways. He expressed the worry that despite the assembly’s efforts, the problem kept reoccurring whenever it rained.
“We have realized that there are a lot of houses, which are situated in waterways and this leads to the reoccurring floods in Kumasi.
“The assembly wants to make sure that the perennial floods menace would soon be a thing of the past so as to save our people from trauma.
“In line with this, the KMA will soon pull down some identifiable houses, located in waterways, in order to stop the flood menace in the city”.
He also sternly cautioned residents to desist from throwing solid waste into drainage systems, saying that such acts cause floods.
Speaking exclusively to the paper, Hon. Osei Assibey also announced that his administration would sustain its policy of dredging waterways and rivers in Kumasi.
