The Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has inaugurated the school’s new Governing Council.
Six new members are joining the remaining nine, including representatives from the unions.
The same representatives from the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Prof E.K. Fokuo; the Tertiary Education Workers Union (TEWU), Mr Charles Arthur; and the Students Representative Council (SRC), Kevin Sah, will be on the new council.
The Governing Council is made up of 15 members, four of which are government representatives. A representative from the government chairs the council.
At Tuesday’s inauguration ceremony, the Asantehene expressed sadness about the recent riots that occasioned the dissolution of the council and necessitated its reconstitution, saying: “It is a pain I do not bear likely.”
Addressing the new members, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II disclosed that he will set up a five-member committee to launch a “full and transparent inquiry” into the incidents that resulted in the destruction of property estimated at GHS1.7 million.
The University was shut down following the riots on Monday, 22 October by the students.

Sacrifices have been made all in the interest of the students.. so they can return to their studies. But for the TEWU and UTAG all attention will be on their attitude and performance. They were hoping for a protracted debate on their representation. Now the onus is on them to fix their mess.
How can Obiri Danso preside over his own downfall? At the moment he seems to have manouvered his way through the Chancellor, UTAG, TEWU, SRC and others. But will the entire student body be satisfied with this arrangement? Will they trust him to deliver this time around? I cannot understand so many things about this Council. It is shambolic, to say the least.
Obiri Danso must go......alright....but first, akufo addo. And ei....emotional intelegence paa? I'm not sure you understand that
ah, how can this be called a new council when otumfuo is still the chancellor? he must step down with immediate effect for being ineffective and inefficient...
Obiri Danso must still Go! We don't want him period. He lacks fundamental emotional intelligence.
