The Akufo-Addo led government will be providing the seed money for the construction of the National Cathedral according to Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.
President Nana Akufo-Addo cut the sod for the construction of the national cathedral on March 6, 2017, as part of events that marked Ghana’s 60th-anniversary celebration.
The cathedral will house a 5000-seater hall that can be expanded to accommodate 15,000. It will also have a baptistery, chapels, conference a centre, and Africa’s first Bible Museum and Documentation Centre.
The government is to provide 14-acres of public land for the project.
The issue of financing has been a controversial one as a section of the public are against government using tax payers money to fund the project.
Even though there were reports that government is not going to make a financial contribution to the project, Finance Minister, Ofori Atta claims seed money will be provided.
Presenting the 2019 budget in Parliament Thursday, the finance minister said: “Mr. Speaker, on March 6, 2017 – the 60th year of our independence – the President cut the sod for the construction of a National Christian Cathedral for the country that will provide the space for national events of a religious nature. A National monument, the Cathedral will house impressive chapels and baptistery, 5000-seat main auditorium, expandable to 15000 people for national events and celebrations.
It will include among others, a grand central hall, a music school, and will house Africa’s first-ever Bible Museum and documentation centre, The National Cathedral project will also bequeath to the country a gracious national park for all Ghanaians; bring new skills, technology and jobs to the country; and will act as a beacon to national, regional and international spiritual tourists. Mr Speaker, the state is facilitating this process by providing the land, the Secretariat, and seed money for the preparatory phase”.
According to him, President Akufo-Addo is determined "that this will not put undue pressure on the tax payer" and that "we hope" the country's contribution "will be counted as righteousness for the nation".

BUILD Hospital instead so that mothers in the rural areas would not be carried like chiefs in palanquin several miles to health care centres. Nurses will get employed as well.
For the records @maama or whateva your name is, Muslims have their mosque built for them with the same aid from Ghana govt in collaboration with Turkish govt why cant the majority Christians have a cathedral, if you truly care to know no matter what you naysayers do or say it would be built to the GLORY OF GOD..
According to Duncan William, Christians are the one leading this crusade against the Cathedral project. Why? it because it is not their party or president building it. And it's a fact
Never insult anybody on the social media, this is a national issue just express your views.I hope you belong to a religious group, either you are Christian,Muslim.atheist none of them allow their members to insult. Please come out to apologise and get freedom for your life.
You are a very big foooolish paaaaa, you and who need it badly. Korshoror gyime gyimy fooo. Are they going to build it for muslems and juju people as well?
May God bless this government for the bold decision. We need it badly. the argument that how many this are we going to use is neither here nor there. How many times do UK government use the west minster cathedral. How many times do we use sport stadium in a year yet teams and nations spend millions to build them. This is not for national matters alone. I bet you every Sunday, we will get a church to hire some space to hold their congregation there.
