The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) have declared an indefinite strike over their salary arrears and delayed promotions.

According to them, efforts to have these issues addressed have proved futile.

Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' program, the Central Regional Chairman for the Ghana National Association of teachers, Rev. Dr Isaac Owusu explained that the decision to declare an indefinite strike is as a result of their fruitless meeting with government and their ministry to have their issues addressed.

"Government has taken us for granted for far too long. Until he decides to meet our demands we are not going to back down on our decision to go on strike," he said.

He added that all the regional Chairmen have met and agreed on their decision to go on an indefinite strike, and like their counterpart NAGRAT, they will still continue with their strike even if the government decides to meet them.

"Our members are worried and they are seeing us as toothless bulldogs so we are urging the government to settle all our arrears if they indeed wants us to return to the classroom."

Six out of the 10 regional branches of the Association say they are embarking on the industrial action following the inability of their employer, the Ghana Education Service (GES) to resolve the many challenges confronting its members.

GNAT said it has been inundated with calls and agitations from its members across the regions for the strike action and the Association is no longer able to control them.

In a related development, the National Association of Graduate Teachers has disclosed that their strike still holds despite their meeting with the National Labour Commission.

Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman for NAGRAT, Senyo Kwame Korkor added that though they have agreed with the Labour Commission, they will not be persuaded by the meeting to go back to the classroom.
