A police officer, identified as Constable Prince Amoah, has met his untimely death during their usual routine at Enchi-Kwawu in the Aowin Municipality of the Western North Region.
According to the report, a team of police personnel went on patrol in Omanpe, and on their way, they allegedly went to some of the galamsey sites in Kwawu to monitor the activities ongoing in the area.
While returning from the galamsey sites, a bridge they were using broke down, and their vehicle fell into the river. On the spot, one of the police officers died, and the other four victims were sent to the Samraboi government hospital for treatment.
The residents who anonymously confirmed the tragedy to the media said the police regularly come to the area to extort money from the illegal miners, and the head of the police command is aware of the situation, but they look unconcerned because they also benefit from the activity.
They also added that this is the second time the Enchi Police District vehicle has fallen into a river at a galamsey site in the area.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at Samraboi mortuary for further investigations.
