The Eastern Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) has embarked on a special fruit tree planting exercise aimed at providing fruits and shades for schoolchildren in particular.
The project, the brain child of Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the Eastern Regional Minister, has begun on some ceremonial streets in the New Juaben Municipality.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo told the GNA that the exercise would serve as wind breaks, shades for the public and provision of fruits especially for school children.
He said during rainstorms many roofs were ripped off because of lack of trees to check the wind and that had resulted in many people becoming homeless.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said the exercise would be replicated in all the districts under the coordination of the RCC and district assemblies.
He appealed to organizations to support the programme by planting fruit trees.
