Livelihood and Environment Ghana (LEG),an Ahafo Community based NGO has appealed to the Ministries of Environment Science and Technology and Lands and Natural Resources to sanction Newmont Ghana Gold Limited for negligence towards the environment and community.
A petition signed by Mr. Richard Adjei-Poku, Executive Director and others from the Newmont mining host communities copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Tuesday called for compensation for the affected communities of the recent cyanide spillage as well as their resettlement.
It urged the ministries to ensure the mining improved its surveillance for timely detection of such incidents and efforts to develop emergency response plan while equipping the communities with knowledge and thorough understanding of the plan.
The statement called on government to provide the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with more resources to enhance its monitoring of Newmont's operations.
