The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Most Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Kwaku Asante, yesterday flew over his top sending a reporter of the New Punch scampering for cover.

It all happened at the forenoon when the paper called on the Presiding Bishop at the Church Headquarters in Accra in an attempt to find out whether the Leadership of the Church had made headway in trying to establish contact with the Rt. Rev. Kow Bosomefi Egyir, who is alleged to have carnally assaulted the daughter of a former Lay President of the Church.

The paper’s mission was to preempt sanctions if any that would be imposed on the said bonking minister when the disciplinary committee of the church met on February 3, 2010 as announced. As soon as Prof. Asante got to know the mission of our reporter, he flew into a rage shouting “Go away, go away, I won’t talk to you”.

His beef was that the paper had early on published the said scandal without bothering to come for their version. “You’ve already published it, so what do you want again” he asked. The Presiding Bishop however counseled that the reporter be given a copy of a news release prepared and issued by the church on the matter, the contents of which are as follows:-

The Methodist Church Ghana, says it has followed with concern developments in the media concerning misconduct on the part of the Administrative Bishop of the church, Rev. Kow Bosomefi Egyir. The church has stated that it is dealing with the allegations against its Administrative Bishop who is currently on suspension in a manner prescribed by the church’s constitution.

In a statement signed by the Presiding Bishop, the Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel K. Asante, the church said it wishes to assure all concerned that, it is dealing with the allegations and that, the church will respect the laws of the land including the constitution.
The release further stated that the church will not do anything to violate or undermine the law. It states that the church will not attempt to do anything which, by law, is the responsibility of some institution or person.
