A MAN has died at a baseball match after losing his footing and falling 20 feet from the stands when he tried to catch a ball. Shannon Stone, 39 who was watching the game with his young son leaned out over a barrier to grab the ball after it soared into the crowd.
But the firefighter went over the railings and plummeted down a gap between the video board and the stands. Ronnie Hargis, who sat next to Shannon when the tragedy unfolded, said: "He went straight down. I tried to grab him but I couldn't."
Witnesses said Shannon was conscious after the fall in Arlington, Texas. But he suffered a cardiac arrest on his way to hospital and was later pronounced dead.
The tragedy happened as Texas Rangers took on Oakland Athletics. Rangers team president Nolan Ryan said: "One of our fans lost their life reaching over the rail trying to get a ball.
