Two suspected armed robbers have been arrested by operatives of the National Highway Patrol team at Obregyema near Begro in the Eastern Region.

On August 3, 2011, at about 3:30am, officers from the National Highway Patrol at the CID Headquarters detailed on the Accra-Anyinam Highway accosted a BMW saloon car with registration number GR 2610 C, with Stephen Adjetey, 32, at the steer, accompanied by Ebenezer Martey, 29.

A search in the car revealed a double nozzle locally-manufactured pistol, with two live cartridges concealed under the carpet of the passenger side of the car.

During interrogation, the two fumbled. However, when the police pressed further, they alleged the gun was given to them for the protection of their business at Ashaiman by one of their brothers whose name was not readily known.

They alleged their said brother got it from a Fulani at Begro.

However, the two have been detained to assist in investigation.

The Highways Commander, Superintendent Obed Dzikunu, assured the general public that the police were on top of their job.

“The IGP and the Police Administration have put in place a lot of measures to ensure that the Ghanaian public went about their duties without fear and at their choice of time.”
He further urged the public to have confidence in the police for protection.
He however noted that since criminals plied their trade among the society, people should be ready to inform the police about the activities of such miscreants for swift response from the police.

Meanwhile, the gun and the cartridges, as well as four mobile phones, are being kept as exhibits.

The two would be arraigned after investigations are completed.
