The police in Obuasi have fired canisters of tear gas to quell a protest by a section of illegal miners referred to as galamsey operators, who are up in arms against the arrest of 150 of their members.
Local journalist, Albert Nana Asante, told Citi Eyewitness News the protestors accused some personnel of the national security to have made the arrest with no apparent reason.
The illegal miners are staging the protest at the entrance of an Anglogold Ashanti concession in the area on Friday evening and have vowed never to budge until their members are released.
