The National Tripartite Committee (NTC) has increased the National Daily Minimum Wage (NDMW) from GHC3. 73 to GHC4. 48, representing 20 percent increment for the public service.
The increase takes effect Thursday February 9, 2012.
The NDMW is the wage below which workers in the public service should not be paid.
Out-going Employment and Social Welfare Minister, Mr E. T. Mensah, who announced this at a press briefing in Accra Wednesday, called on all establishments, organisations and institutions to accordingly adjust their minimum wages.
The NTC which comprises organised labour, employers and government has expressed commitment in ensuring better working condition for public workers in Ghana.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, Mr George Smith-Graham, has told Graphic that the Commission would adjust the base pay of the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) to reflect the new minimum wage as stipulated by the law.
Currently, the base pay of the SSSS is pegged at GHC4. 10 which is below the new minimum.
