Burial Grounds For President Mills Yet To Be Decided
Consultations are inconclusive regarding the burial of former President John Evans Atta Mills at a new Presidential Memorial Cemetery designated at the Flag Staff House.

Mr Kofi Totobi Quakyi, the Chairman of the Funeral Planning Committee for the late President President John Evans Atta Mills, told graphic.com.gh that consultations had not been concluded.

He said the essence of what was going to happen was to get a special burial place for all democratically-elected presidents of the Republic of Ghana.

The Minister of Communications and Member of the Funeral Organising Committee for late President, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, had told journalists that the family of former President Mills had given its consent for the late President to be buried at the Flag Staff House.

That decision to bury the late President Mills at the Flag Staff House, he had said, followed a directive by President John Dramani Mahama that a Presidential Memorial Cemetery be created at the Flag Staff House, for the burial of late presidents of Ghana, subject to agreement by their respective families.

He was speaking to journalists during a visit by President Mahama and other government officials to Cape Coast to officially inform the chiefs of the Oguaa Traditional Council, and the family of former President Mills, of the death of their son and relative.

Meanwhile a statement issued by the planning committee and signed by Mr Quakyi said that all enquiries concerning arrangements for the state burial of the late president should be addressed to the Office of the Director of State Protocol, State House, Accra or email [email protected]

The statement announced that Wednesday, August 1, 2012, remains the deadline for submission of tributes in memory of the late President and that tributes to be considered for publication in the official funeral brochure should reach the planning committee by close of work on that day.

It said that Tuesday, July 31, 2012, marked a week since the passing away of President Mills and that all regional ministers, district, municipal chief executives would in collaboration with the various regional party executives make arrangements for the observance of the customary one week mourning.

Former President Mills died on June 24, at the 37 Military Hospital after a short illness.

A state funeral for the late President has been scheduled for August 8-10, 2012.
